Vane Tempest, a former deep mine colliery at Seaham has been reclaimed and developed as a major new housing site of approximately 600 new homes including village centre, family pub, play area, linear park, country trail and network of footpaths and cycle ways.
Artist Andrew McKeown has created thirty-four sculptures situated throughout the site. Each artwork was inspired by the single cell micro-organisms called Diatoms, which form the basis of almost all the food chains in the oceans.
The sculptures are metaphors for the start of new life at East Shore Village, where the old Vane Tempest coalmine stood.
