This work was commissioned to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), whose celebrated wood engravings were a critical influence on the growth of popular interest in natural history.
Hilary Paynter revisited the Northumberland and Tyneside landscapes known to Bewick and recorded in her graphic mural many features which would have been recognisable to him in the 18th century.
